The Visual Cortex

David Hubel and Torsten Wiesel won the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, for their discoveries concerning information processing in the primary visual cortex. Click here to see a great video in which David Hubel talks about the road he took in science (about an hour long).

The Primary Visual Cortex by David Hubel

An actual recording of a simple cell by Hubel and Wiesel

The figure below shows human ocular dominance columns in the V1 of the left cortex after the loss of the left eye late in life. Serial sections were processed for CO about 5 hrs after death. The dark regions of cortex serve the intact right eye. Full PDF

Pluto by the New Horizons space craft in 3D. Cross your eyes so that you see three Plutos. When this occurs notice the middle one is in 3D, like a marble or inverted into a hollow sphere.

Some examples of red-green stereo (3D) pictures. Best viewed with red green filtered glasses. Without these glasses Notice that objects that are far are blue/green on the left and red on the right, objects that are near have the opposite disparity, and those at the focal point have no disparity
